Creativity

Version 1 · published September 7, 2026

Creativity is producing something that is both new to the situation and useful in it. It covers generating options that were not already on the table, connecting material from one domain to a problem in another, working productively inside a constraint rather than treating it as an obstruction, and carrying an unfamiliar idea far enough that other people can evaluate it. Novelty alone is cheap. The capability is the pairing of novelty with fitness, and the labour of getting an idea from a suggestion to something that works.

What creativity is not

  • It is not artistic ability or aesthetic sense, which are specific applications of it and are absent from most placements. It is not idea generation in volume, since producing twenty options and developing none of them leaves the problem where it was. It is not originality in the absolute, because an approach standard in another field and unheard of in this one is creative here. It is not rule-breaking: a learner who ignores a constraint has not solved the problem the constraint defines. And it is not the same as being interesting, which is a property of the person rather than of the work.
